CMC Launches Documentary Production in Collaboration with Four Community IDD Agencies:
The Community Media Center of Carroll County (CMC), in collaboration with The Arc Carroll County, Target Community & Educational Services, Inc., Bello Machre, and Penn-Mar, is producing a 60-minute documentary titled, Thriving Together: The Power of Inclusion, to highlight those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) living and working within our community. This documentary will provide a resource that shows the beneficial contributions of the IDD population and the agencies that support them and the organizations that employ them. The project will culminate with a public screening of the documentary on December 2, 2025 at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster, MD.

“This documentary provides a powerful lens into the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, highlighting their talents, contributions, and the mutual benefits of inclusion in our community. By sharing their stories through accessible digital media, we are able to share these stories with a broader audience to increase its impact.” -Richard Turner, CEO, Community Media Center.
The perception of people with IDD has long carried a societal bias. Stereotypical viewpoints of this population may result in discrimination and prejudice or cause a feeling of discomfort and avoidance. Regardless of the manifestation of social interactions, it becomes a critical task to start to impact change by shifting away from a society with disability bias and towards one of acceptance, support and inclusion.
“We are honored to be part of this groundbreaking documentary. We hope to encourage greater awareness, support, and inclusion for the IDD community, ensuring that every person has the chance to live a full and meaningful life.” - Jen Johnson, The Arc Carroll County.
Weaving the threads of these stories together as they unfold will show how little wins can become big accomplishments. This offers a variety of viewpoints and perspectives creating intrigue for the viewer. As the participants highlight their abilities and superpowers, it builds empathy and a positive perception for the audience and delivers the message of beneficial contribution and capability.
“Everyone deserves a place at the table, and this documentary will show the incredible contributions of the IDD community. We are excited to highlight Target's partnership with McDaniel College Human Services Management Graduate Program and look to inspire the next generation.” -Gail Slater, TARGET Community & Educational Services, Inc.
Beyond the initial objective of this project in creating an educational awareness of people with IDD and the importance of their role in the community, the secondary objective is to raise financial and volunteer support. The CMC will lead the efforts to develop financial support through sponsorship opportunities and individual donations from the community .
“We believe stories have the power to change perceptions and embolden the community to be involved. This project creates the opportunity to spark real conversations, promote empathy, and inspire action.” -Hunter Jackson, Bello Machre.
The power of this documentary serves as a testament to the strength and resolve of the Carroll County community and the organizations and nonprofits that serve it. After the launch, the documentary will be offered to be used by organizations that promote leadership development, community and cross-movement building, education, and capacity building for people with and without disabilities and can provide additional curriculum that can be extended for use within public and private school systems.
“This view will highlight the importance of the connection with people through their communities with the support of their team: provider(s), direct support professionals (DSPs), family, and friends. The collaboration's purpose is to inspire everyone to live courageously in pursuit of their best lives”. -Danielle Gattine, Penn-Mar.
