McDaniel College Professor receives Nursing Faculty Fellowship

McDaniel College Associate Professor Jennifer Ort, assistant director of McDaniel’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), is a recipient of a Nursing Faculty Fellowship from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC).

The award supports the recruitment and retention of nurse educators in Maryland by providing grants to new full-time nursing faculty of $10,000 annually over five years, or $50,000 total, as a way to grow the state’s nursing programs. The funds can be used for professional development, research, or other expenses not covered by the faculty member’s salary.

The fellowship program is part of MHEC’s Nurse Support Program II to help address the statewide nursing shortage.

Ort joined McDaniel in spring 2024 to assist McDaniel’s Nursing Program Director Heather A. Gable with implementing the college’s new nursing program, including finalizing the curriculum and hiring additional faculty.

She has over 30 years of nursing experience and previously taught at Western Connecticut State University. A certified maternal newborn nurse and lactation educator, Ort is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, National League for Nursing, and the American Nurses Association.

She holds a Doctor of Nursing Science from Russell Sage College and a master’s degree in Nursing Education from Mercy University, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Dominican University, and Associate of Applied Science from Frederick Community College.
