Young Performers in Tropical Tale “Once On This Island, JR.” on stage at the Carroll Arts Center
Carroll County's most talented pre-teens take the stage this November at the Carroll Arts Center in a fully staged production of Once On This Island, JR. With its poignant story and catchy Caribbean-flavored score, this show is a highly original theatrical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, and the Tony-nominated Broadway musical.
Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred, and even death.
Featuring 25 students in grades 6-8, the production is a culmination of a rigorous rehearsal process under the direction of Lindsay Sier, the Arts Council’s Theatre Coordinator. “This story will make you laugh, cry, and want to get up from your seats and dance,” said Sier.
Performances will be held on Friday, November 8 at 7 pm; Saturday, November 9 at 3 pm; and Sunday, November 10 at 3 pm. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $8 for Students & Seniors; Arts Center members receive a 10% discount. The Carroll Arts Center is located at 91 West Main Street in downtown Westminster.
