Government Maintenance Support Services

Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors, operating equipment, and making a visible difference in your community? 

In this hands-on role, Street Equipment Operators will operate a wide range of equipment and contribute to essential City services, including roadway maintenance, landscaping, facilities support, and public safety response.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, bobcats with attachments, pavers, rollers, street sweepers, snowplows, tractors, and related tools
  • Perform roadway maintenance, including asphalt and concrete work, striping, signage installation, and traffic control
  • Conduct landscaping and grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, tree planting/removal, and park upkeep
  • Assist with trash collection, litter control, and transport of materials to disposal sites
  • Support building and facility maintenance, including minor repairs, painting, and carpentry
  • Install and maintain storm drains, pipes, and related infrastructure
  • Assist with preparation and cleanup for City events and programs
  • Perform snow and ice removal, including plowing, salting, and sidewalk clearing
  • Maintain equipment and report malfunctions or safety concerns

Training and Career Development

Equipment Operator I: $17.76/hr - $19.00 (DOE) – no CDL required at hire; must obtain Class A CDL within one year.

Equipment Operator II: $21.11/hr - $23.00 (DOE) – CDL Class A + Sedimentation and Erosion Control Certification required.

This position offers opportunities for additional earnings through overtime, particularly during:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate heavy equipment
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements within a specified timeframe

Final candidates must successfully complete the following in accordance with City policy:

  • Background investigation
  • Drug and alcohol screening (including random testing for CDL-required positions)
  • Physical examination
  • Driving record review

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of all pre-employment requirements.

Physical and Work Conditions

This position requires heavy physical labor, including lifting, climbing, bending, and prolonged standing or walking. Work is performed outdoors in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, precipitation, noise, and other elements. Use of personal protective equipment is required.
